How Do Ground Source Heat Pumps Work?
A ground source heat pump system consists of a series of buried pipes called a ground loop and a heat pump unit inside the property. The ground loop circulates a water/antifreeze mixture which absorbs natural heat energy stored in the ground.
The heat pump unit works by passing this liquid through a heat exchanger and compressor to concentrate the absorbed thermal energy. This heat can then be transferred into the home through underfloor heating pipes or warm air distribution.
In summer months, the process reverses – the ground source heat pump extracts excess warmth from inside and transfers it back into the cooler ground, providing energy-efficient air conditioning.

The Benefits of Geothermal Heating & Cooling
-
Exceptional Efficiency
Ground source heat pumps achieve efficiency ratings of 400% or higher since they only move heat rather than generating it through combustion. This translates into much lower heating/cooling costs.
-
Renewable, Low-Carbon
Ground source systems utilise renewable thermal energy stored naturally in the earth's surface rather than burning fossil fuels. This significantly reduces your carbon footprint.
-
Year-Round Comfort
One geothermal system provides both heating and cooling, keeping your home cosy in winter and refreshingly cool in summer.
-
Long Service Life
Quality ground source heat pumps boast very long lifespans of 25+ years with minimal maintenance required thanks to few moving parts.

Apply for a grant today
The UK government offers several incentives and grants to support the adoption of renewable energy systems like solar panels and air source heat pumps. Homeowners may be eligible for schemes like the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which provides quarterly cash payments over seven years to offset installation costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ground source heat pumps work exceptionally well when paired with underfloor heating but can also interface with conventional radiators. Ask about adding smart heating controls for fully automated, intelligent comfort.
Ground source heat pumps are incredibly efficient, capable of producing 3-4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity consumed. This allows them to achieve efficiency ratings over 400%. Their renewable heat source and lack of combustion make them far more efficient than traditional gas/oil boilers.
The amount of land needed depends on the specific ground loop design. As a general guideline, a typical 4-bedroom home requires about 600-1000 sq metres of trenching area for a horizontal ground loop. Vertical boreholes require far less surface area but are more expensive to install.
Yes, ground source heat pumps can easily reverse their operation in summer to provide highly efficient air conditioning and cooling throughout the property. The same system handles both heating and cooling needs.
Ground loop installations do involve excavation work which can be disruptive, especially for horizontal loop systems. However, NW Renewables takes care to minimise disturbances as much as possible and restore any excavated areas afterward.
Ground source heat pumps use a compact indoor unit similar to an air conditioning unit. These can be installed in utility rooms, basements or garages and connect to the ground loop pipes running underground outside.
